Features To provide controlled ventilation under normal operating conditions or for emergency ventilation in the event of other systems failing. The windows can be mounted to the carriage bodyside either via an external or internal flange or as a cassette if a flush/ribbon glazing effect is required.
Traditionally the top third of the window is an opening vent, or hopper, that hinges to the interior of the carriage when opened by either a passenger or the guard. For passenger operable hopper vents a spring loaded catch is usually mounted central to the top edge of the vent but, in cases where the ventilation has to be controlled by a guard, budget locks are normally concealed within the framework thus ensuring that only authorised operators can open the window with the appropriate key. The vent can either be a single panel or two (twin) panels if desired. Glass retention is achieved in many ways with the most popular being rubber wedge positioned either on the interior or exterior of the window. Using non-specialist tools the wedge can be removed and replaced, thus allowing glass replacement in around 30 minutes. Alternatively the glass unit can be bonded to the aluminium framework if a completely flush/ribbon glazing effect is required. PLP also manufacture internal aluminium trim frames to accompany the bodyside window which creates a perfectly matching finish to the eye of the passenger. Both the window and the internal trim frame can be designed to have square and radius corners or a mixture of both if desired. Glazing Both single and double glazed units can be accommodated with the appropriate method of retention such as the rubber wedge or an aluminium clamp frame. PLP is able to provide appropriate test data if it is a repeat of a proven design or undertake specific testing on behalf of a client for a new design. Design PLP has an experienced engineering and design team dedicated to enhancing existing products by tailoring them to bespoke installation requirements as well as researching new developments in materials and production technology to push the boundaries of performance but at acceptable quality standards and commercially viable levels. Coupled with the modern manufacturing facility there is no problem too great for PLP to overcome.
Containment The UK railway industry is examining methods best employed to protect passengers as far as is practicable, from fatal injury in the event of a rollover crash condition occurring. Generally known as the "Containment" standard. PLP has performed extensive type testing in conjunction with a number of industry partners aimed at understanding the performance of existing bodyside windows to revised specifications, as well as developing new systems for modern day demands. PLP has the capability to undertake impact testing in-house conforming to the pending RSSB specification GM/RT2100.
