There are currently two designs of detrainment steps available although both retain the overall principle of being able to provide a safe means of passenger evacuation.

Firstly the semi-automatic design is permanently fixed to the vehicle and has steps that fold up and stow in to a tray located under the floor of the carriage. The handrails pivot and locate against the front of the carriage, positively locking into place whilst the vehicle is in motion. In the event of deployment the device can be operated by a single person in seconds providing a rigid structure for safe usage.

Alternatively if under-floor stowage space is at a premium then the device can be simplified by deleting the handrails and replacing with high strength webbing. In similar fashion to the semi-automatic device the steps fold into a small space envelope for stowage in a convenient location within the vehicle.

In the event of deployment the steps are positioned into pre-determined location points at the foot of the door aperture whilst the high strength webbing straps run from the lower step to anchor points at the head of the door aperture.

Note that the weight of the folded device is relatively light thus enabling one person to perform the deployment or stowage act with ease.
